The mutual separation of actinides (An) from lanthanides (Ln) using the masking agent of DTPA (diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid) or DTBA (diethylenetriamine-triacetic acid-bis(diethylacetamide)) in the aqueous phase through DGA extraction, referring TALSPEAK method, is focused. We investigate to obtain the same separation performance using commercially available DTPA on that using DTBA. In this work, we select lactic acid (LA) of pH buffer from 10 organic acids and ethylenediamine (ED) for the pH adjustment. Almost the same D and SF values are obtained among the conditions: TODGA-DTPA-LA-NaOH, TODGA-DTPA-LA-ED, and TODGA-DTBA-LA. The experimental results using batchwise multi-stage extractions show the average yields of Ln (La to Gd) and Am to be 3.73 and 98.1% in the aqueous phase using DGA-DTPA-LA-ED, to be 3.1 and 97.0% using DGA-DTPA-LA-NaOH, and to be 1.61 and 98.7% using DGA-DTBA-LA.

The Survey for the integrity of containers for secondary wastes generated from contaminated water treatment

Iida, Yoshihisa; Nakadoi, Yasumasa; Yamaguchi, Tetsuji

Genshiryoku Bakkuendo Kenkyu (CD-ROM), 24(1), p.53 - 64, 2017/06

The information on the contaminated water treatment in Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station announced by Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc. (TEPCO) were summarized in terms of the management of the secondary wastes, for the purpose of accumulating technical knowledge for long-term storage of the wastes. Concerns for the long-term soundness of waste storage containers were pointed out as follows, corrosion of stainless steel containers exposed to radiation in the presence of chloride ions, corrosion of stainless steel containers under acidic conditions or in the presence of activated carbon, and radiation degradation of the high-performance container (HIC) in which slurry was stored.

Ion track membranes of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) are applied to the production of anisotropically conducting films possessing copper wires of less than sub-micron in diameter. The membranes possessing cylindrical pores of 1.9 $$mu$$m and 200 nm in diameter were prepared by irradiation of $$^{129}$$Xe$$^{23+}$$ ion beams followed by etching in an aqueous NaOH. Copper wires were deposited into the pores by electrochemical plating in aqueous copper sulfate solution to prepare the PET/Cu hybrid membranes. The copper wires with 1.9 $$mu$$m in diameter showed wavelike surface roughness, resulting from the roughness of the pore side wall, whereas the copper wires with 200 nm in diameter showed smooth surfaces. The resistances of the membranes measured by a four terminal resistance method are in good agreement with the calculated values, indicating that the hybrid membranes possess conductivity perpendicular to the membrane surfaces but not parallel to the surfaces.

Styrene grafted and sulfonated proton conducting membranes based on radiation-crosslinked polytetrafluoroethylene and their fuel cell applications

Yamaki, Tetsuya; Asano, Masaharu; Morita, Yosuke*; Suwa, Takeshi*; Yoshida, Masaru

Proceedings of 9th International Conference on Radiation Curing (RadTech Asia '03) (CD-ROM), 4 Pages, 2003/00

Proton exchange membranes were prepared by the radiation-induced grafting of styrene into crosslinked polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) films and subsequent sulfonation. The degree of grafting was controlled in the range of 7-75% by the crosslinking density of the PTFE matrix as well as the grafting conditions. The films at the grafting yield of $$geq$$ 30% were found to give the ion exchange membranes with a homogeneous distribution of sulfonic acid groups. The resulting membranes showed a large ion exchange capacity reaching 2.9 meq g$$^{-1}$$, which exceeded the performance of commercially-available perfluorosulfonic acid films such as Nafion. This will encourage the use of our ion exchange membranes in polymer electrolyte fuel cells.

Cross sections for 138 processes of hydrocarbons in collisions with electrons, based on available literature sources, are critically compiled. The leterature has been surveyed to September 2000. A short comment is given for each measurement. The recommended data sets are presented in separate graphs for each process. Analytic fits to the recommended cross sections are also presented.
